Purely on her quality, we had decided to place Crescent Moon’s Mary Katherine in the Destination Sale earlier this year. Our thinking was that a robust and elegant white Matrix Belvedere daughter would be desirable for many breeders. Then, we sheared her! We knew that she had a very prominent dark spot on her right flank/hind quarters but had no idea that she had several others throughout her blanket. Seven other spots to be exact. AOA Show rules state that in the AOA Show system six spots makes an alpaca an appaloosa. That is a basic interpretation of the rule so we would encourage you to read it fully. That said, Mary Katherine is an appaloosa. Spots once bothered breeders, but not so much anymore. With the new genetic color testing we have learned a lot about the opportunity those spots provide for breeders. By auction time, we hope to have her bred to LibertyAlpacas Manifest-Destiny.
